Perquè imagina't ara començar a treballar.

Heaven Park - "The Mas Garbí"
On February 3, 1874, a platoon of volunteers from the 16th Infantry Battalion of the Carlist Catalan army en route from Hostalric to join the siege of Santa Coloma de Farners was held off by a hailstorm at the Mas Garbí. The masovers (farm tenants), though loyal to the republic, knew better than to deny them shelter. The troops ransacked the pantries and terrorized the women and children, except for an old woman by the hearth, clad in tattered robes and a cowl, whom they assumed to be deaf after she failed to shout viva el rey at gunpoint. The lieutenant soon lost interest on her and turned his attention to the farmer’s daughters, busying around to arrange the soldiers’ lodgings. As he watched the youngest flapping the linens it occurred to him, and so he expressed, that they might need a guide in the morrow should the storm smear the roads during the night. At that point the old woman, in fact a pilgrimess en route to the Eleven Shrines who also happened to be abusing the farmers’ hospitality, quickened up and whipped off her cowl. She was younger than her hands had hinted. In the most polite terms she informed the officer that she would gladly show them the way, but only if they departed at once, for she was under an oath and it was imperative that she reached the first shrine before midnight. When the lieutenant jeeringly directed her attention to the weather outside the window, he found himself pointing at rainbows and sterling skies. Some soldiers at that point might have grown uneasy and would have preferred not to tempt fate any further, but the woman, now a maiden to all appearances, flouncing about with much zip and zest, was already pepping them off their cots, tossing them their cloaks and berets, warning them that they would need to keep up, for she was a brisk walker. The lieutenant then famously said, “Perhaps you could serve as mule then, as well as our guide,” to which she replied, “I certainly can, if you are too weak to walk yourself.” That bit of snark right there was what sealed the outcome of the story. In high dudgeon, the lieutenant rallied to break camp at once and demanded a bullwhip and a harness to bridle the mouthy pilgrimess. Two baffled soldiers buckled the straps around the woman’s chest, gave the reins to their commander, and in this guise they marched outside. Birds basked in the syrupy sunlight, chirping in merry disbelief. In the middle of the threshing floor a black, twisted fig tree cried tears of icy dew. While the soldiers scrambled to formation, the bridled pilgrimess stopped by the fig tree, and pointing northwest toward the Vulpine Ridge where the Eleven Shrines are scattered she said, to nobody in particular, “I shall be there.” The lieutenant clutched the reins and flicked the bullwhip uncoiled. At that moment, the masover shoved his family back indoors to spare his children the sight. Inside, he noticed the lieutenant’s sable on the windowsill. He ran back to return it, and before he reached the door a thunder clapped and a blast of wind whacked him off his feet. The whole family scrammed outside: it was hailing again. On the threshing floor, three footprints led away from the center, yards apart, and the last one was several inches deep, and the stone was cracked around it like ripples on a pond. The soldiers at sixes and sevens pointed northwest at the solid stormcloud into which the woman had vanished, and their fingers followed the speck that was their lieutenant, loose reins whipping in the wind, plummeting into the roiling woods. After that the platoon disbanded in terror. The besiegers in Santa Coloma never received the reinforcements.

Cegador #3

I ho enyoro molt.
I espero tornar-hi encara l’any que ve. :)

No ens hem repartit els papers encara.

Alegria!

The Kids Will Be Alright
So. Yes. Apparently I published some new material in English. After seven years. Last week.
Pardon my nonchalance -- I would have definitely warned you this was coming had I been certain it was coming, but the process wasn't exactly smooth, and my mind too, I confess, was somewhere else. I get so easily distracted from work these days. I wonder why.
Anyway! The Kids Will Be Alright is a collection of four short stories with an emphasis on panic, gays, and jokes. You know--my brand. It is an audiobook-exclusive release from Recorded Books. It's not in print, there is no plan to release it in print. This is it. And this is where to get it.
![]() |
| January and me at Books Are Magic in Brooklyn, August 2018. (Doubleday didn't like my Sasha Grey T-shirt for this event.) |
Furthermore, The Kids Will Be Alright is my second collaboration with extraordinary voice actors Kyla García, who did the Meddling Kids audiobook, and January LaVoy, who did This Body's (and with whom I once had the pleasure to do a two-people, three-voices reading—she was Adrian and Zooey, I was the third wheel). Complementing their talents is Michael Crouch (Salt to the Sea, Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda), lending his voice to a rare first-person text from yours truly.
I didn't have the deliberately passed on the chance to append some personal notes to the collection, because I like my books unencumbered by prologues, commentary and author notes. That's what author blogs are for, IMO. So if you're interested, here's what little these stories don't say for themselves:
"A Good-Looking Corpse"
By far the oldest piece in the collection: this pulpy story of a vendetta laced with hilarious body horror was written originally in Catalan as Un cadàver bonic and published in some literary anthology in 2013, wherein its reception persuaded me never to participate in Catalan literary anthologies again. Fans of angry butch heroines will probably enjoy it a lot more. I'm actually happy that she's getting a second life. Or third. The English translation is my own.
"Goin' Down"
Based on the little-known "Choose Your Own Adventure" book of the same title, extant only in a few deep, deep basements. Am I contractually banned from mentioning this thing's publication history? I may be? Well, the people at Recorded Books were nice enough to adopt it, so I respect that. And aren't you curious to see what Michael, Kyla, and January did with it? :D
"You Don't Know This"
The odd one out. Also my favorite piece in this collection. Most of the time I go outside for some inspiration and come back with half-formed ideas, maybe a few lines of dialogue, at best a good paragraph in mind. This day in 2022 I left home for a walk through Hollywood Hills completely empty-headed as is my custom, came back, and typed all 3.5K words of this in one sit. My agent Margaret Sutherland Brown later helped me fine-tune them. It's not really horror, but it's honest. Perhaps even cringey. But that's writing, in a way, isn't it? Exposing yourself, edging closer and closer to the line of embarrassment without trespassing it? It's not? Okay. Forget it.
"The Fifth"
Well, it's unavoidable to mention at this point that this collection was going to be FIVE stories, not four, so the last one being called "The Fifth" was very funny. But then they dropped one of the stories due to budget constraints, and now it's less funny. The title, I mean. The story is still quite entertaining, imo. Really twisty. Plot- and bones-wise. The idea was to start with something innocent and childish, in the vein of There's a Giant Trapdoor Spider Under Your Bed, and slowly ratchet up the violence to the level of A Good-Looking Corpse, thus closing the circle. And all while following the magic rules established back in Meddling Kids. You know the deal. It takes five.
*
And that's all for now. All there's left to say is, thank you for waiting this long. I know other authors put out a lot more content. Believe me, there is a lot more content (I swear, see for yourselves). It's just...complicated. But I'm on it.
Oh, and if you like the book? A review helps so much. Anywhere. Your online bookstore, your socials, your blog, your podcast, your coffee break. Thank you all. Sweet dreams. :)

A saber.)
IN ENGLISH: If I'm not posting here, I may be posting on my other blog. (Or perhaps I transcended at last, I hopped into the Renault 8 of a mysterious woman who had no time to explain, and I am now loafing in a paradise of rainbows, landlines, and soda in glass bottles. Who knows.)
EN CATALÀ: Xxxt! Tindreu notícies de Verri ben aviat. ;-)

A.Z. vs. J.K.
Rowling sure looks happy to embrace the villain role she's decided to play in life. Good. I like how those end.
